In November of 2022, Knob Hill Landscape Company began work on one of the largest, one-of-a-kind natural ecosystems they've ever created. The project was created in partnership with Horace Mann for their downtown Springfield headquarters.
The ecosystem features mossy-sandstone boulders to create the pond, which includes a wetland the size of two standard size swimming pools. Water is recirculated through a large wetland filtration system promoting the health of the local aquatic ecosystem, without the use of chemicals. Multiple species of water loving plants give the appearance of shallow, marshy areas near natural rivers. Tree stumps and logs aid in the biomimicry of the ecosystem and offer nourishment for local species. The permeable paver patio offers a relaxing space to view one of the three large waterfalls that aid in water flow and oxygenation.
From left to right: Wetland filter and waterfall, intake bay, large urn waterfall, small urn waterfall, permeable patio, night lights, aquatic plantings, softscape plantings, and shade sails were all installed for this project.
Project Breakdown:
This large-scale outdoor project was one of the most complex and rewarding builds our team has completed to date. From advanced water features to custom hardscaping and native plant installations, every detail was designed to blend natural beauty with long-term functionality. Over the course of 101 working days, our skilled crew of eight transformed the site into a stunning, multi-functional landscape. Here's a look at the scope and scale of what went into bringing this vision to life:
8 team members worked 101 working days
Installed a huge wetland filter
Intake bay/surface water skimmer
3 Waterfalls
150,000 gallons of water using 9 pumps
2000+ sq. ft. permeable paver patio

The VP of Field Research & Contractor Development for Aquascape Inc, Ed Beaulieu "aka Ed the Pond Professor", came down to Springfield, Illinois to view the finished Downtown Educational Ecosystem. Landon Kirby, the owner of Knob Hill Landscape Company and a certified Aquascape Contractor, sat down with Ed and talked about the final product.
Before Knob Hill Landscape Company
Before we broke ground on this transformation, the space looked very different. These photos show the original conditions of the site — a blank canvas with untapped potential. From uneven terrain to overgrown vegetation and minimal structure, the area was ready for a complete makeover. Take a look at the “before” shots that set the stage for this incredible project.
A Sustainable Design With A Purpose
One of the most remarkable aspects of this project is its commitment to environmental responsibility. Designed as a completely self-contained and self-sustaining ecosystem, the landscape features innovative natural filtration systems, chemical-free water management, and eco-friendly materials throughout. Hear what Josh Shelton of Horace Mann had to say about the vision and impact of this one-of-a-kind outdoor space:
This project is unique because the entire ecosystem is self-contained and self-sustained. No chemicals are used, and the patio is made of permeable blocks with layers of rock underneath to naturally filter all rainwater and any runoff from our grounds. It will utilize a 40,000-gallon natural filtration system to keep the water crystal clear and safe for animals."
